Thought I'd post this in a fresh thread for visibility, as I figured out my problem via emails to BOYD while the site was down and he worked out a workaround for it:
If you find the census on mouseclick doesn't respond to much at all, and you get some error messages popping up about attempting to call method Hookscript, then you most likely have a conflict with another addon which wants to use mouseclicks (such as VuhDo or HandyNotes, both of which were conflicting for me).
The workaround to this is: disable the option to hook into clicks on buttons and only use the click in the game world option - that solved it for me anyway, census takes quite nicely while I'm playing the game as each loot or right-click/drag to change direction triggers it (if outside the 5ish sec delay window)

Re: Known issue with mouse-click census taking - workaround
Ah cool. I'd worked out there must be a conflict and had seen mention of only using game world interactions, so once I disabled the other option (and reloaded) it started working like a charm. As I tend to use my mouse fairly regularly to move, it works pretty quickly and smoothly. The only thing I've noticed is if i stop moving for a while, and it's mid-census, it comes up with the error about server too slow - I can probably hide that through the options somewhere tho?
