I have had a chance to do a few queries on the database and hers's some info!
Total number of users who submitted data : 1177
Total number of character updates: 4,001,496
Max possible tickets: 4001
These don't count anon entries or my own entries. I will get the user pages updated asap with tickets held and total numbers for the contest.

Boy, even though I knew a scenario like this was possible I can honestly say that this will be a big waste of time if I don't win. But I suppose that's the way it rolls either way. I don't expect to be putting in anymore time to CensusPlus except for the servers I regularly game on. It's just too tiring doing all that work without some sort of larger chance for a reward. I gotta hand it to you though Rollie. You've got a lot of patience.
Personally even though it's understandable, I'd kind of feel cheesed if somebody not in the top 10 won. Anything less than 20000 entries can be done in 2 days. And to string that out over nearly 3 weeks is trivial.
I guess I can now understand why Dreadicus, Eyeball-Dragonmaw, and Xianna all took a holiday from submitting the last couple days. The odds just don't serve to make it worthwhile to have a commanding lead. Even if I were to give you all my tickets Zimeron (which I won't, of course) it wouldn't gaurantee you of a win by any chance.
However, I suppose a 4.56% chance of winning is better than most. Here's to hoping!

You better not fix the votes just because Gendril will be pissed if someone in the top ten doesn't win..

The contest was never meant to be a most entries wins type of thing. That's why it's a drawing and not a flat out top contributor wins. I never expected anyone to make a job out of it. Contests are supposed to be fun!
The contest was designed such that anyone who submits data would have a chance to win. It is due to the efforts of everyone, not just a select few, that we are able to gather the amount of data we have.
The whole intent of the contest was an attempt to get more folks submitting data so that more realms could get better covered. And I have to say that it was a huge success. Just look at the Realm stats page to see the difference.
Before the contest, there were a lot more red servers (servers with less than 50 submissions in the last 30 days), and now there are much less.
Anyway, I am sorry if you feel your time is/was wasted if you do not win. A 1 in 20 chance of winning is still pretty good.

Yeah if someone in the top 10 doesn't win, i'd feel cheated. And yeah i just run it on Kargath now.

I quite honestly don't understand where this attitude is coming from. Did I word something incorrectly in making people think that if they are one of the top 10, then they would be almost guaranteed to win?
Where did this line of thinking come from and what more can I do to ensure that people do not get this idea in the future?
I would maybe understand if the top 10 covered 80% of the updates, but fact is, when you include anon entries and my own, the top 10 holds about 11% of the total character updates over the 3 weeks the contest was running. There are a lot of other folks out there who are making submissions and doing their part to gather data.
A site like this cannot exist on the efforts of a select few. It takes a whole community to be involved in order to cover all the servers out there to a meaningful degree.
In the end, this was meant to be fun. It was meant to give something back to the users and encourage greater coverage. It was not meant for people to 'work' at submissions like a job and then think they were 'owed' something in the end.
If you feel your time was wasted, then I am sorry, and I hope that does not stop you from being a part of the community here and taking part in future contests as well.

Oh yeah don't get me wrong. I understand how it works, and I think the way it works is the best way to encourage more submissions. If it was top contributor won then you wouldn't get nearly the amount of submissions as has been sent.
I won't be pissed either way Valalvax. I may have came across as sounding a little more "cheesed" than I actually am or will be either way the contest turns out. I posted last night after midnight my time and I was in a hurry to post as well so take what I said with a grain of salt.
And Rollie. No need to apologize to me. The rules were spelled out from the beginning and I fully understand them. I'm just lamenting beforehand is all. I had no idea that so many people submitted. Good for you and the goal of this whole project though. I'm very glad that you accomplished your goal and it is good to see so many submissions and have more accurate results.
It's kind of nice seeing my name on the top though.
I'm thinking my energies would be better spent sending you some of the code enhancements I had been using during the contest. I think this is a wonderful AddOn and I'd love to continue to contribute; however, doing so many submissions has just tired me out of that. Back to playing!

You posted before I was finished posting my last message. Boy yer quick
Most of my last post inadvertly covers the stuff you said, but I just wanted to add that I don't think there's anything that you could have done differently. I suppose for myself I never thought that there would be as many small submissions (people with < 10 tickets) as there were. If I had known that I might have submitted about half as much.
It's my own fault for not anticipating this. I suppose I'm most frustrated in myself and not the contest itself. Whatever happens, congrats to the winner!
No worries, no regrets.

Personally I understood that I had a slim chance to win wether I was top 10 or bottom 1. I just plugged along with my normal schedule of Play, Upload, go to bed. I threw in a few different servers once in a while out of curiosity if it would help my #'s but it never did as it seemed they were all being covered. Either way, if I win or don't win, I'll still just keep updating the 2 servers I play on and dream of owning an Ipod

Hmm i seemed to have worded that wrong lol! I realize that everyone has a chance, and its was for fun, i never really "worked" on it as you could say, as i just played some alts on diff servers. I love the contest and think that it was a great idea to improve the census. I mean i went from running it occasionaly, to having it run auto, all in hopes of that Ipod! Who ever does win though, is one lucky person.
And yes your right that everyone has a chance to win it, and it took the effort of a lot of people (you have how many people are acutally in the contest bty?). And i would just like to say again thanks for throwing a great contest at the expense of yourself, only to help more people in the long run
Keep it up Rollie
Are you still assigning tickets?

I noticed that you started assigning tickets before all the submissions were processed. I figured you would assign more tickets after all the last minute uploads were done, but now it is sounding like you are done assigning tickets and I was wondering if that is really the case. I think I got about 7500 more updates uploaded before the midnight cutoff (based on the timestamp on my profile page). I realize that 7 more tickets won't help my odds much, but I really want to get a little higher in the top contributor list

I can't believe nobody else caught this! Now, I can believe that I screwed up, but I count on all you guys to keep me in line ;p
You are correct! There is a whole days worth of submissions that were not included. All tickets were assigned through midnight on the 19th when it was supposed to go through the 20th!
The good news is that it's easy enough to just add them in. I'll get those processed. Shame on me for screwing up in the first place, and shame on everyone else for not catching it until now!
I have an excuse though, lack of sleep from a newborn is a rough thing!

I ran the data from the last day. It added 117 more tickets to the pool. Unless there are any other problems, ticket assignment is final and the drawing will be held tomorrow (Friday, 9/23, 2005) at 8 PM CST outside the gates of Orgrimmar on US-Bloodscalp.

Well, since you stated on monday that we'd better get our submissions in by midnight I assumed that you didn't want any possible maintenance day issues and had decided to end it on monday night. Not an unreasonable assumption and logical enough, I saw no reason whatsoever to disagree with that since it's your contest to run and the rules stated that you could end it prematurely
Not sure but guessing that most people reading the forums assumed something similar?
I got my last submissions in then and didn't make any submissions on tuesday, I generally try to avoid taking and submitting census on maintenance day anyway since the numbers are often way off compared to regular days.

Yeah i found it weird that it was over on Monday night, but you said tuesday midnight, which could refer to either or actually lol! I just rationizled the answer!
