General warning Scam Emails

Post by bringoutyourdead »

In the last few days I've been getting Scam Emails using my Warcraft Realms email address.

These mailings claim to be from Blizzard, but sent via Hotmail and in reality originating from China. The mailings are attempting to get you to go to a scammer website and have you enter in your Blizzard security details.

If you should get any unsolicited mailings of this nature be sure to double and triple check the actual source of the mail. Blizzard doesn't not use non-Blizzard addresses to send out mail.

Also if you do think you need to check something from a mailing sent to you. DO NOT click on any links in the mail.. instead go to the actual Blizzard sites and follow their links for account management.

They're branching out, expect to be on their mailing lists for a while and receive similar for Aion, Star Trek, FFXIV etc.

I got one for Warcraft and one for Aion today too.

The question is, how did they get our email addresses? Was warcraftrealms hacked or did they sell our email addresses to these scammers?
:?

PS: for some reason, the links included in these emails actually point to the official web sites of Blizzard and NCSoft. Are they relying on keyloggers to get accounts info?

If you copy the link and paste it into notepad or any other text editor you'll see that the link isn't to the official site, sometimes you'll have to look carefully but it's not. Unless they include something containing more logic they can't infect you with a keylogger from an email, unfortunately any attachment pretty much can do it if you're short a few patches, pdf's, most picture and video formats, office docs and pretty much anything beyond simple text. These have been pretty simple ones though.

Yes I am receiving emails specifically to my unique email address I use ONLY for this site.

This sit is either selling our contact information or has been breached and our email addresses stolen. Neither is good.

A site admin needs to address this immediately.

Also, to note, this is from the privacy policy:
We may use your personal information for internal marketing, profiling, or demographic purposes, so we can adapt our products and services to better suit your needs. We do this to better understand and serve our visitors. Additionally, This information is only to be used by WarcraftRealms.com and not to be sold, or put into the hands of a third party website or company.
If this is true, then warcraftrealms has had a security breach. Admins take note.
